I discovered that I was failing to adapt in my business… doing things the hard way and wasting a lot of valuable time for the sake of “doing it the right way”… or what I thought was the right way.
This change was a big one for me. It meant letting go a little and accepting that maybe I don’t have to be the best at everything… maybe it really is okay if I “cheat” (because seriously, it felt like I was cheating if I didn’t do things the long way).
I made a reasonably sized investment in myself and my business when I bought these templates, and I want to talk more about how much they have changed my productivity and allowed me to create a better user experience that’s not only more professional looking, it’s increasing conversions… turning my average lookie loos into subscribers, and my subscribers into customers.

How is this making me more productive?
Okay, so it hasn’t cured me of my Facebook scrolling or email checking habits. Sorry… I can’t help you there. But instead of dreading having to put together certain pages that I knew I needed, I’m actually kind of excited to build them, and even more excited for people to see them!
This excitement has made me be much more productive in my work because I’m not internally whining about it anymore – I can literally put together a simple landing page in less than 20 minutes. That means I get to move on with my life and work on other stuff… like making more free content.
I’m not wasting hours… sometimes even a couple of days worth of my time… just to make a single opt-in page. Letting go a little and accepting that I don’t always have to do things the hard way has made all the difference in the world.
So why is this important? What does it matter whether or not I had these pages? How are these pages making me passive income?
Let’s go behind the scenes, shall we?…
I needed to connect further with my audience
I’m all about user experiences, and I realized long ago that my readers weren’t being given a professional or even a useful experience.
Picture this scenario…
A reader signs up for an opt-in freebie via my email marketing program of choice, ConvertKit. Of course CK offers a lot of customization as far as where to send a subscriber after they fill out a form, or what to send them once they have confirmed their email address.
But I found that I was the one really dropping the ball here because I was just using ConvertKit’s built in success message to do the work.
Not only is it covered in ConvertKit’s branding, it wasn’t doing anything for my business. I was missing out on a HUGE opportunity to direct my subscribers to take actions…
- Read a blog post
- Share / Pin / Tweet the opt-in they signed up for
- Check out a tool they would need for a course
- Browse my shop for products
These missed opportunities were money being left on the table.
I showed my audience something they needed
My first ah-ha moment came when I realized that I could finally with ease do something I’d always wanted to do… one of the first big things I think I ever learned from a fellow entrepreneur.
If you aren’t familiar with the term, it’s when someone signs up for a free course or other opt-in freebie and you offer to sell to them a related item at a steeply discounted price for a short amount of time.
So check this out… Someone signs up for Get Pinned, my free Pinterest email course. After they have signed up, instead of just getting a success message from ConvertKit, they land on a slick looking page like this one:
I offered my audience something they were going to need – Social Media Templates. Not only did I make sure they knew it was available to them, I offered them at a nice discount.
This in itself has made a huge difference in my business – easily making me an extra $100+ in sales the first week I implemented it. All while I was off doing other stuff… like sleeping!
Being able to put together these landing pages quickly made it possible for me to make more of them and to make money more efficiently – which I think is really key if you want truly passive forms of income.
I helped them, help me
If you learn nothing else from this post, learn this: No direction given means no action taken.
You need to give your audience something to do, and that’s exactly what I was missing. I was providing these super valuable and totally free opt-ins (some are even pretty in depth courses, like this one about how to build your own free resource library). I knew other people would love these freebies too… if only there was some way for them to find out about them!
So check out this scenario:
Someone signs up for my course and instead of that icky Success Message with ConvertKit’s branding, they land on this awesome page instead…
Not only is this much nicer to look at, it’s useful to the subscriber in a lot of ways:
- They get the success message up front so they know they are enrolled.
- Now they know what to expect – they’ll start getting those emails today.
- They get the chance to see my face and get to know my brand a little.
- I direct them to where they can read my latest blog posts.
But most importantly of all: I give them a way to SHARE!
I’m using a free website called Share Link Generator that lets you create a single, clickable URL that you can add to buttons like I did. When you click on those buttons, it’s set up already so that they are at the point of publishing the URLs and images you specify.
This is the result of NOT wasting time…
I once spent more than 12 hours coding a sales page the hard way – all to find out that it wasn’t even working correctly on mobile devices. I’m ashamed of that, but I think it’s important for you to understand what a real difference you could be making for yourself.
These pages are all part of my system of passive forms of income, and they help direct my audience to freebies, information, tools, and products… most of which are available for sale either by myself or an affiliate.
Pro Tip: Be sure you recommend only products and services you really stand behind. You can even use affiliate programs in your success messages like this one I made to promote my friend Ana’s free Affiliate Marketing course:
I’ve never been more excited about my business
My main goal this year was to work on passive forms of income, and this one purchase gave me the tool I needed to increase my productivity and finally get these major pieces into place. I see so many ways I might use these going forward, but it’s also helped me take a good look at older blog posts that could benefit from free opt-ins and useful landing pages like these.
Now I don’t have to agonize over building beautiful landing pages that convert… that get my audience to take action… that earn me money while I’m sleeping.
